How to engage the general public
There’s a very magical thing going on at Te Papa at the moment: they’re thawing a colossal squid so they can examine it, and the general public are able to participate. For one thing, Te Papa are live blogging — melting ice:
The colossal squid specimen has been slowly thawing overnight. Shortly we will assess how far it has progressed and add another tonne of ice, as the temperature of the water has been creeping up and is above 8 degrees centigrade.
[Via Te Papa's Blog: melting ice.]
Just in the last 24 hours (28 and 29 April 2008) there have been about 23 blog posts with small and large updates, photos, squid information. Then there are the live cams, with some (erratic) audio:
See my blog post about how to view the video, if you’re not sure: How to watch the colossal squid webcast.
The TV News crews have been there, radio interviews are available via podcast and a film crew is creating a documentary.
TV, radio and even documentary are all old-school, but the live webcams and the live blogging really allow the general public to engage and participate. It’s all very exciting, especially in this era when science is somewhat overlooked.

Returned and Services’ Association does digital poppies
The RSA - The Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association Inc. is perhaps one of the last organisations I’d expect to be implementing creative digital ideas. But their digital poppies for cellphones show that I’m quite wrong:
Poppy goes Digital!
“Support the RSA and buy a mobile poppy! All proceeds from each sale will go to the Annual Appeal. The annual Poppy Day Appeal embodies the core values of the RSA — remembrance and welfare. Thanks to Voeveo our mobile poppy is available here

Engage your Community conference a hit
The Webguide Engage Your Community Conference was a busy day in Hamilton. More than 140 people attended the day, with presentations and hands-on workshops.
The top photo shows Ted Zorn, Conference organiser listening to a speech by Sue Maroney, MP.
Some of the audience, listening to the address by Sue Maroney, MP.
Update Note: these two photos were taken with a cellphone (a Sony Ericsson K800i) and emailed direct from the phone to Flickr. At Flickr I viewed the alternate sizes, chose an appropriate size, copied the HTML code that Flickr provided and pasted it in here.

Workshop notes: Keeping up with the Joneses
- Keeping up with the Joneses: the easy way to stay in-the-know — Miraz Jordan
- Organisations need to keep up with news of current events and other flows of information that affect and relate to the work they do, both currently and in the future. This workshop, presented by Miraz, will help you learn how to keep up with the flood of information, and get started on efficiently monitoring what’s going on in the world that you should know about. She’ll talk specifically about using RSS feeds and a “technology scout”.
Resources
For this workshop there is an example RSS feed address: http://radionz.co.nz/rss/news.xml.
There is also a starter OPML file. Download either the raw XML file (12Kb), or the zipped XML file (4Kb). If you download the zipped file you need to uncompress it before trying to use it.
